The Internet began as a network among research universities and was financed by military research. The Internet however is not owned by a company or an individual. The internet is often referred to as the World wide web. However not every internet services are part of the www. Skype for example is not part of it.

Data is encoded as a simple digital sequence of ones and zeros which is sent through a worldwide data stream. This unfortunately allows strangers to hack into the networks and steal valuable information from companies and private users.

There are various types of networks, which have evolved since the existence of the internet. It has moved from a rather centralized network to a more decentralized form. A completely distributed network is however not yet fully in mass use.
