DUST JACKET

←BACK
This was the first project I was given when I started my study at Willem de Kooning Academy. The aim of the assignment was to create a so-called dust jacket for a not yet existant book about myself.

The title of the assignment was I'm new here, speaking about the first weeks in Rotterdam and at the academy and reflecting on the impression those weeks gave me

I chose to speak about the city life tat I experienced in the Netherlands for the first time, making a strong contrast to the rather quiet countryside where I am from.

As I mentionned abouve, I wanted to reflect on city life. Rotterdam is the second big city I lived in. To many people Rotterdam is not even considered as a large city, but to me that is relative to one's origins. The tall skyline of the portcity of Rotterdam seemed very impressive to me and reflects the busy, yet charming atmosphere. One the design for the dust jacked I therefore used a silhouette of the skyline of Rotterdam and the in the background it says words that came to my mind after moving here.

The words in the background are words like traffic, architecture, population, noise. These are things that impressed me during the first days here, and that were symbolic for my new experiences, referring to the title, 'I'm new here'.

For the speech bubble that contains the title, I scanned and reused my own handwriting to keep the personal relation between myself and the work.
